Can ChatGPT read your dealership website? How to check

Maybe not, even if your site looks great and ranks on Google. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so if your pages build their text with JavaScript, an assistant may see little more than a menu and a footer. The good news is you can check in a few minutes.

Why would a good-looking site be hard for AI to read?

Because people and crawlers see different things. You see the finished page in your browser after all its code has run. A crawler that skips JavaScript sees only the raw page the server sends first.

If your inventory, prices and contact details are only filled in after JavaScript runs, that raw page can be nearly empty. There is nothing for the assistant to quote.

How can I check my site myself?

Here are five checks you can run without being technical:

  1. View the page source. Open one of your inventory pages, right-click and choose "View page source." Search for the price or model name of a home you have listed. If you can't find it, a crawler that skips JavaScript probably can't either.
  2. Look at your robots.txt. Go to yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you see lines that block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended, those assistants are being told to stay out.
  3. Compare your contact details. Check your name, address and phone on the home page, contact page and footer. They should match exactly. Leftover template text like "123 Main Street" is worse than nothing.
  4. Find your newest dated post. If your latest blog post or news item is a year old, or has no date at all, assistants have little reason to see your site as current.
  5. Read your headings. Do any of them sound like a question a buyer would ask? "Can I finance a used home?" is easier to quote than "Financing Solutions."

What does the DealerTide AI search score check?

It runs the checks above and more, then gives you a score with specific findings. It looks at:

  • Whether AI crawlers are blocked
  • Text that only shows up after JavaScript runs
  • FAQs, and whether they have FAQ markup
  • Question-style headings
  • Placeholder or mismatched contact details
  • How fresh your dated content is
  • Whether the site has an llms.txt file

The score is our own rubric, not a Google score. It is meant to show you what to fix, in plain language.

How do I get a free scan?

Ask us for a free site scan. We will show you how your current site does for AI search and give you a downloadable PDF of the findings. You can use it to fix your current site, or to see what a DealerTide site would change.

Frequently asked questions

If Google ranks my site, can ChatGPT read it too?

Not necessarily. Google runs JavaScript when it crawls. Many AI crawlers do not, so they can see less of your site than Google does.

Is the AI search score a Google score?

No. It is DealerTide's own rubric, built around what answer engines tend to favor.

Does the free scan change anything on my site?

No. It only reads your public pages and reports what it finds.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my inventory?

Blocking assistants like ChatGPT and Claude also keeps them from quoting you. DealerTide sites welcome AI assistants and block scraper bots that resell dealer inventory.
